Quantitative Weather Researcher

Ongoing

The green transition is moving fast – and so must we. That is why we are looking for new colleagues to join our Renewable Energy Asset Analytics team.

Our team works at the forefront of the green transition with the ultimate task of optimising the utilisation of renewable energy assets, such as wind and solar energy, and harnessing the flexibility that comes from, e.g., batteries and Power-to-X. We do this by developing data-driven forecasting models, automated optimisation, and trading algorithms that ensure that we do not waste green energy on bad decisions.

About the job and responsibilities

As a Quantitative Weather Researcher in Norlys Energy Trading, you will be collaborating with people of diverse technical backgrounds – bridging the disciplines with mathematics and code - on a wide range of exciting projects. The weather plays a vital role in all our applications, and you will contribute with your knowledge and technical experience in meteorology to enhance the team’s ability to develop innovative models and algorithms that exploit meteorological data (be it forecasts, observations, or reanalysis products).

In addition, it is also possible to work with algorithmic trading strategies, where meteorological data are used as features in models that predict energy prices – using techniques such as nowcasting and reinforcement learning.

The team works closely with colleagues across the Norlys Energy Trading organisation and with our partners in Norlys and Eurowind who are building the physical assets and infrastructure to replace the fossil-fuel generation units. Intermittent power generation from renewable assets is highly weather-dependent, posing many challenges for the power grid and markets, and as the role of renewables in the energy mix increases further, meteorology becomes increasingly important for energy trading companies.

What we are looking for

  • A degree (minimum MSc, possibly PhD) in meteorology/atmospheric science, applied mathematics, applied physics, or similar technical education
  • Demonstrable experience with meteorology-oriented data science/analytics
  • Strong programming skills, preferably Python
  • Strong analytical and mathematical skills. You should be able to understand and work with complex data sets

Besides the tasks above, you will, like every one of us, play an instrumental role in making our company the best possible workplace by helping colleagues and departments wherever possible.

We strive to create close and friendly interactions across teams and to build confidence in our professionalism and decision-making abilities.

We offer

  • 160 highly dedicated and friendly colleagues from more than 19 different nationalities
  • A large degree of autonomy and influence on your daily tasks
  • Opportunities to grow and educate yourself further during your employment
  • An active staff association with many social activities all year round
  • A competitive salary and good pension agreement
