As renewable energy sources like wind and solar become more prevalent, their intermittent nature poses new challenges—and that's where you come in. Our clients are spearheading ambitious projects that increasingly incorporate cutting-edge technologies such as batteries and Power-to-X (PtX). We are seeking a creative, driven, and experienced Optimization Engineer to join our Energy Research Lab, a newly established R&D unit, to develop groundbreaking optimization algorithms for the revenue optimization and operation of energy storage systems.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement advanced optimization models for energy storage, including batteries and power-to-x technologies, within an energy hub.
  • Formulate and solve optimization models, such as Mixed-Integer Linear Programs (MILP) and Dynamic Programming, and explore advanced topics like stochastic optimization, sequential decision-making, reinforcement learning, and simulation.
  • Apply detailed technical knowledge of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), including understanding degradation, physical characteristics, and performance under various operating conditions.
  • Utilize optimization models to support decision-making under uncertainty in wholesale energy markets, focusing on the efficient and profitable operation of renewable energy assets and batteries.
  • Collaborate closely with the energy trading team to develop and refine bidding strategies for renewable energy assets and batteries.
  • Stay updated on the latest trends in electricity markets, including day-ahead, intraday, and ancillary service markets, to enhance optimization strategies.
  • Contribute to the modeling, development, and deployment of economic dispatch models that integrate batteries with other renewable production technologies.

Job Requirements

  • Master’s or Ph.D. degree in (Power System) Engineering, Operations Research, Mathematics, or another relevant field.
  • Proven expertise in the optimization of energy storage, particularly batteries and ideally also power-to-x technologies, within an energy hub.
  • Extensive experience in formulating and solving optimization models, including LPs, MILPs, and ideally advanced topics such as stochastic optimization, machine learning, and simulation.
  • Deep technical understanding of battery storage systems, including degradation, physical characteristics, and integration with renewable power systems.
  • Professional experience as an optimization engineer or data scientist in wholesale energy markets.
  • Strong proficiency in Python, particularly with the scientific stack (pandas, scipy, numpy, etc.).
  • Ability to translate business requirements and technical specifications of generation assets into efficient and clean code.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to convey complex technical concepts and recommendations to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • A team player who adheres to team processes, including thorough documentation and communication of technical work.
  • Self-starter with the ability to take ownership in a fast-paced startup environment.
  • Understanding of the electricity market, including day-ahead, intraday, and ancillary service markets.
  • Experience in modeling, development, and deployment of economic dispatch models for managing batteries alongside other renewable production technologies.
